Description

The following bug report has been submitted:
Platform: macOS-13.5.2-x86_64-i386-64bit
ChimeraX Version: 1.7.dev202309121847 (2023-09-12 18:47:21 UTC)
Description
OpenGL core profiles support point sizes > 1 and it might be interesting to allow setting larger point sizes. The points come out as squares. To make them round would require shader support to drop fragments outside the circle.

Dear ChimeraX Maintenance Team,

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to seek assistance regarding an issue I have encountered while working with protein models in ChimeraX.

After performing MPL calculations on protein models, I have found that I am unable to modify the dot size of the resulting surface representation. In Chimera, this task was easily accomplished through the "Model Panel" by adjusting the "MSMS Model Attributes". However, I have not been able to find a similar option or command in ChimeraX.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide guidance or suggest a solution to address this matter. Being able to adjust the dot size of the surface representation is crucial for my current research project, and I rely heavily on the functionalities provided by ChimeraX.

Thank you very much for your attention to this matter. I look forward to your kind assistance and prompt response.

Best regards,
Zhuangwei Zhang, Ph.D.

On my Intel Mac with Radeon Pro 580 graphics points sizes 1.0 - 8191.0 are allowed and on a Mac Mini with Apple M1 GPU, point sizes of 1.0 - 64.0 are allowed as reported by glGetFloatv(GL_SMOOTH_POINT_SIZE_RANGE).

But the points are rasterized as squares and it requires shader code to make circular points by dropping fragments outside the circle radius. In legacy OpenGL (before shader programs) the points were rasterized with fully transparent color outside a circle and alpha blending could be used with the fixed-function pipeline to show a circular point. I think this is what old Chimera is doing. But I think that is not part of modern OpenGL since rasterization does not generate alpha values.
