Please tell us more about your computer. We have reports of this, but have been unable to reproduce it so far. We know you're using Ubuntu 22.04. Other information that might be helpful include:
1) is this a virtual machine? if so, what software are you using? VirtualBox? VMware Workstation Player? Amazon EC2? etc.
2) what is the model name of your CPU (look at /proc/cpuinfo)?
3) what is the output of "lspci -nnk | grep VGA"?
4) are any of the following environment variables set and what values do they have: XDG_SESSION_TYPE, DESKTOP_SESSION, XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP, and XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
5) and what is the output from "glxinfo | grep OpenGL" -- you might need to install the mesa-utils package to get the glxinfo command.

I believe this is a problem with the Nvidia graphics driver and Wayland. Please try switching to X11 from Wayland and let us know if that fixes the problem. See https://askubuntu.com/questions/1410256/how-do-i-use-x-instead-of-wayland-on-22-04.

comment:5 by Greg Couch, 3 years ago

Belay that. Rereading the ticket, I see that you are using the open source Nvidia driver, nouveau. You need to switch to the proprietary Nvidia driver.

See https://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/pipermail/chimerax-users/2022-July/004030.html
and https://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/pipermail/chimerax-users/2022-November/004568.html
