This appears to be a Qt bug on Mac related to dual displays, especially when one display is retina and one is not.

Back buffer dpr of 1 doesn't match <_NSViewBackingLayer: 0x6000033b18f0> contents scale of 2 - updating layer to match. 

Possibly ChimeraX was running on the laptop display and then they closed the laptop and it moved to the external display.
