Description

The following bug report has been submitted:
Platform:        Linux-5.13.0-52-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.31
ChimeraX Version: 1.4 (2022-06-03 23:39:42 UTC)
Description
I wanted to download and install ChimeraX on my Ubuntu 20.04.
There were multiple problems on the way.

I downloaded the following file:
`ucsf-chimerax_1.4ubuntu20.04_amd64.deb` (built: 2022-06-10 02:40:45 PDT)

Then I run the following command, which did not execute successfully.
`sudo apt-get install ./ucsf-chimerax_1.4ubuntu20.04_amd64.deb`

Instead I had to run:
`sudo dpkg -i ucsf-chimerax_1.4ubuntu20.04_amd64.deb`

The output notified me that there is an unmet dependency, so I had to install:
`sudo apt install libgfortran5`

After that running ChimeraX from GUI did not work, so I ran it from terminal to get this error:
```
xkbcommon: ERROR: Couldn't process include statement for 'us(qwerty)'
xkbcommon: ERROR: Abandoning symbols file "(unnamed)"
xkbcommon: ERROR: Failed to compile xkb_symbols
xkbcommon: ERROR: Failed to compile keymap
[323543:323566:0720/084133.908259:FATAL:xkb_keyboard_layout_engine.cc(641)] Keymap file failed to load: us-qwerty
Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped)
```
I tried to debug it but to no avail, and then I got an idea to just switch to a different keyboard layout and only then ChimeraX finally started.

Summary: ChimeraX bug report submissionUbuntu 20.04 installation and keyboard problems

comment:2 by Greg Couch, 3 years ago

libgfortran5 is listed as a dependency and apt-get installs dependencies while dpkg does not, so that is all expected.

We did miss some dependencies. That has previously shown up if someone installs Xubuntu instead of the normal Ubuntu. Is that true in your case?

Anyway, please try "sudo apt-get install libxcb-icccm4 libxcb-image0 libxcb-keysyms1 libxcb-render-util0 libxkbcommon-x11-0" and let me know if that fixes your problem.

Hello, thank you for your reply.
My OS is normal Ubuntu, not Xubuntu. And `sudo apt install` did not
install ChimeraX. Instead, it gave me this message:```Note, selecting
'ucsf-chimerax' instead of './ucsf-
chimerax_1.4ubuntu20.04_amd64.deb'```When I googled this problem,
somebody mentioned possible problems with dependencies, so I tried with
dpkg, which indeed showed I needed the already mentioned `libfortran5`.
If it would work as you say, I assume the first call to `sudo apt
install` would probably installed it.
Regarding the keyboard issue, I tried to install the packages you
mentioned, but I already have all of them:```Reading package lists...
Done

Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done

libxcb-icccm4 is already the newest version (0.4.1-1.1).

libxcb-image0 is already the newest version (0.4.0-1build1).

libxcb-keysyms1 is already the newest version (0.4.0-1build1).

libxcb-keysyms1 set to manually installed.

libxcb-render-util0 is already the newest version (0.3.9-1build1).

libxcb-render-util0 set to manually installed.

libxkbcommon-x11-0 is already the newest version (0.10.0-1).

libxkbcommon-x11-0 set to manually installed.

0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.
```So the problem is not solved. Well, I can start Chimera with the
work-around as I said in the first email, but I guess you would like to
have this fixed in case other users won't figure this out by
themselves. Happy to test other solutions.
All the best,
This rambles a bit, but the result is that you should try the ChimeraX daily build and see if that fixes your problem:
The "Note, selecting 'ucsf-chimerax' instead of ..." is an information message, not an error. If you had let the install finish, it would have worked. Even with "Permission denied" informational message at the end. So the bug is somewhere else.
Googling "xkbcommon: ERROR: Couldn't process include statement for 'us(qwerty)'", I see that it is related to an invalid keyboard configuration. Unfortunately, I have no experience with that. I would start by going to the Settings application, and choosing the Keyboard panel, to see what the system thinks the keyboard is.
More googling shows that a version of this bug was supposed to be fixed in Qt 6.2.5. ChimeraX 1.4 uses Qt 6.3.0. In the Qt 6.3.1 release notes, there are two bug fixes that might affect you:
QTBUG-102493 [REG 6.2.2 -> 6.2.3] Keyboard layout resets to English
QTBUG-102640 [REGRESSION] Keyboard layout not respected for some key combinations
The ChimeraX daily build uses Qt 6.3.1.
