Description (last modified by )
To paraphrase Phil: we like that the mapping of buttons to the cones shown in VR. However, the mapping is not good for some of the controllers where the buttons are in different places. So we would like Tom G to take a look at making different mappings that better match the different controllers.
Maybe Phil can comment on which specific controllers are poorly represented by the current mapping.

Meta Quest completely dominates the VR market so I think only their controller layout matters at this point. ChimeraX still handles the old Vive controller layout too. Windows Mixed Reality has been abandoned by Microsoft and is less than 5% of the Steam market share and declining. Valve Index headsets are about 15% of market share but also declining.
I think unless other VR companies introduce different controllers we do not need further ChimeraX support for non-Quest controllers.

Summary: | RFE: adjust VR mappings of controller buttons to cone display for different controllers → Adjust VR controller button layout for different controllers |
---|
Currently the VR code looks for Oculus Touch controllers and Vive controllers and tries to lay out button positions to match the controllers. It does not handle Valve Index or Windows Mixed Reality layouts.
It would be useful to know what controllers need an improved layout.
