Description
The following bug report has been submitted:
Platform: Windows-10-10.0.17134
ChimeraX Version: 1.2.5 (2021-05-24 04:13:57 UTC)
Description
Installed ChimeraX 1.2.5. First time, allowe precompilation of Python. Got error message upon opening ChimeraX for first time (also nothing seemed to work).
Uninstalled, reinstalled without precompilation option. Approximately the same error message upon opening for the first time.

ChimeraX cannot start because your Radeon graphics driver is broken. You will have to update that driver to get it to work.

Thank you very much for your rapid response to: #5121: OpenGL startup errors The program now appears to be working normally (almost). I am writing now just to provide whatever benefit my experience may allow for future troubleshooting. No need for a response. Windows 10 reported that my Radeon graphics driver, ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT (1/13/2015), was working properly. Also, old Chimera (no X, 1.13.1), which I understand also uses OpenGL, works fine on my computer. Even so, I went to AMD looking for a newer driver, but they had none listed for anything beyond Windows 8. Microsoft offered something newer, but rather than risk screwing up my dual screen display (a complaint by someone on the web who had updated an HD 2400 XT driver), I thought it was simpler just to change computers. ChimeraX installed and loaded without incident on the other computer (using Intel UHD Graphics 620). It works great. I'm satisfied. During the installation, however, I noticed the warning about an incompatibility problem with OpenGL.dll from ChemOffice 2002. Out of curiosity, I scanned my original computer for OpenGL and found a version of opengl32sw.dll used by a program, Mendeley. Mendeley runs as a conventional application and also one that runs in background, and both were running throughout the events I recounted. The version of opengl32sw.dll is smaller (15MB vs 20MB) and older (<6/4/2018) than the version used by ChimeraX. The proper test would be to uninstall Mendeley and then reinstall ChimeraX, but I wasn't willing to bear the risk of doing that (I could lose a lot by uninstalling Mendeley). Instead, I closed the conventional application of Mendeley, uninstalled ChimeraX, and reinstalled it (a feeble effort). Surprisingly, although I got the same error message,... ChimeraX worked! But (AND HERE'S THE MAIN POINT), I think I was fooled in the first go around -- *ChimeraX was probably working then as well*. I attempted to load a PDB file, getting a thumbnail but no full image... AND I FAILED TO NOTICE THE GUIDANCE TO ISSUE THE COMMAND 'graphics restart'. So nothing worked. Now, I get the same error message, but when I execute 'graphics restart', the image appears and at least a few functionalities -- maybe all -- are working fine. Maybe some deficiency will appear later on, owing to a problem with opengl, or maybe everything really is OK. Either way, I have the program working on my other computer, and all is well. Thanks, Jeff

Thanks for the detailed report. OpenGL graphics drivers are one of the buggiest parts of desktop operating systems. I can understand your reluctance to update it because it may effect other software, but that is the root of the problem. Chimera uses an older OpenGL while ChimeraX uses modern OpenGL, so Chimera is likely to tolerate an old and buggy driver better.
