Description

The following bug report has been submitted:
Platform: Linux-3.10.0-1127.19.1.el7.x86_64-x86_64-with-glibc2.14
ChimeraX Version: 1.2.3 (2021-05-13 06:57:20 UTC)
Description
When opening via the GUI browser, any file that requires association with an AtomicStructure (trajectories, MTZ files, ...) fails with an error message. Might it be possible for the `open` code to recognise if the user's used the GUI browser, catch this error and launch a little window to choose the right model to associate it with?

Summary: ChimeraX bug report submissionOpen dialog vs. required args

comment:2 by Eric Pettersen, 4 years ago

Well, the *goal* is achievable, but not really by the means you're suggesting. The "open" command has no idea what arguments are mandatory, nor how to query for them nor what informational text should be provided to the user when querying. Supporting that would require a fairly massive revision to the "open command" protocol.

The individual readers are free to throw up the appropriate interfaces and proceed. That's what the PSF reader does. If it sees that the mandatory coordinates-file argument is missing and that it's executing interactively (session.ui.is_gui and not session.in_script), it throws up a file browser for it. I could certainly do the same thing for the MD coordinates formats (well, a structure chooser instead) but you'd be in charge of the same for MTZ files.

This approach also allows you to be lazy when typing the command and use a dialog for half of it.

in reply to:  3 ; comment:3 by Tristan Croll, 4 years ago

Thanks - will make Clipper do that.

comment:4 by Eric Pettersen, 4 years ago

The code that does it for PSF files is near the top of the read_psf() function in chimerax.md_crds.read_psf. There are structure chooser widgets in chimerax.atomic.widgets.

comment:5 by Eric Pettersen, 4 years ago

Resolution: fixed
Status: acceptedclosed

Opening a coordinates file will now throw up a structure chooser if the structureModel arg is omitted (and > 1 structure is open)
