Description
I get weird black boxes around background-exposed edges when saving figures with silhouettes. Sometimes this also appears in the main view, but turning silhouettes off and on again usually resets this - but they always appear in saved files. Happened in v1.1.1 and updated to v.1.2.2 and same problem occurs.

The silhouette noise has been reported twice before #4541 (https://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/trac/ChimeraX/ticket/4541) and #4273. All reports have been on the exact same model MacBookPro16,2 using macOS Big Sur and the problem does not occur on other Mac computers I tested on. It appears to be a graphics driver bug only seen on this exact model of Mac laptop. In the previous report the user did extensive testing for me but I could not figure out any way to work around the graphics driver bug. Probably if I had this exact model of Mac laptop I could figure out how to work around the driver bug -- but without directly testing on such a machine I have no way to debug it.
Sorry I have no solution. Apple has no interest in improving the cross-platform OpenGL graphics driver since they use their own proprietary Metal graphics library. The even deprecated OpenGL a few years ago. So I would not expect Apple to ever fix this in a macOS update.
My only recommendation if you need silhouettes in images is to save a ChimeraX session on the Mac, then copy it to a different machine (Mac, Windows, or Linux) and make the images on the machine with working graphics.

Hi Tom, Thanks for the quick response. That’s pretty extraordinary, but I’ll give that a go tomorrow and hopefully a colleague will be able to help me out! It’s doubly frustrating as I just need to re-create a figure I made on my old laptop in response to some reviewer comments :) Best, Chris

Just tested on another Mac for silhouette noise on a new Mac Mini (model Macmini9,1) with Apple M1 processor. Silhouettes are correct including when image saved. Not surprising.
