The following bug report has been submitted:
Platform:        macOS-26.0.1-arm64-arm-64bit
ChimeraX Version: 1.11.dev202510170018 (2025-10-17 00:18:50 UTC)
Description
This bug occurs after waking the computer from sleep (but not every time). It happens eventually to all sessions that I've had open. It happens also in the 1.10 release.

I will submit another report if I can pin down what exactly is needed to trigger it.

It would be great if you can find a recipe to produce this glClear error when Mac ChimeraX wakes. I think it is likely to require multiple connected displays. I have never seen the error on my Mac with one display. And others who have reported it I believe always had multiple displays connected.

It is almost certainly a Qt window toolkit bug, and Qt 6.8.2 that ChimeraX 1.10 uses is known to frequently crash on Mac with multiple displays when waking and I had hoped that Qt 6.9 that is being used in ChimeraX daily builds seems to have fixed that crash. But now we have this OpenGL "glClear" error. If you can tell me a reproducible recipe that would help me to test different versions of Qt to see if any of them have fixed the bug. Thanks!

Hi Tom,

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.

Indeed I am using two monitors. One is connected through a HDMI-HDMI
connection, and the other through a USB-C to DP cable.

I used ChimeraX 1.10 for all of these tests.

To reproduce:

   1. Start ChimeraX
   2. open 1ttt
   3. Set computer to sleep through the Apple menu
   4. Wait for about 10 seconds minimum
   5. Wake the computer from sleep

The error is in ChimeraX upon waking from sleep. It doesn't matter which
monitor ChimeraX is on when the computer goes to sleep.

Oddly enough, it seems to be the presence of a monitor connected with the
USB-C to DP cable that causes the crash. With a single monitor connected
with the HDMI cable, the above steps do not trigger the error in my hands.
If the same monitor is instead plugged in with the USB-C to DP cable, the
crash occurs.

I've only reproducted this with one monitor (a Dell U3425WE)—I don't have
so many cables and monitors available to test it with other setups.

I was restarting the computer each time after changing the monitor setup.

I hope it helps. Let me know if you want me to try anything in particular.

That is very helpful information. I have almost the same 2023 Mac Studio model (Mac14,14 while yours is Mac14,13) and USB-C to display port cable to a Philips 278B 4K monitor and your recipe does not produce the glClear error on my machine. So either your specific cable or specific Dell monitor is an important factor.

At any rate it seems likely that it is a macOS bug. It is probably a rare bug because very few applications use OpenGL on Mac as ChimeraX does, since Apple 10 years ago replaced OpenGL with their proprietary Metal grahics. But applications that work on Windows and Linux use cross-platform OpenGL 3d graphics. It could also be a bug in the Qt windows toolkit. It manages the ChimeraX OpenGL context and maybe it is not handling some event from macOS that only arises with the usbc-displayport cable.

I guess there is some hope that if you used a different cable you could avoid this problem. Maybe not worth it to you. Unfortunately I don't think there is anything ChimeraX can do about this.
