Description
The following bug report has been submitted:
Platform: Linux-6.8.0-40-generic-x86_64-with-glibc2.35
ChimeraX Version: 1.8 (2024-06-10 23:15:52 UTC)
Description
Random "might be nice to have" suggestion: a "displayed" (and possibly also a "visible") keyword to use in command-line atomspecs (i.e. "sel #1&displayed"). I realise this can already be done with "sel #1&@@display=True", but it feels like a nice easy quality-of-life addition?

So "displayed" would just be equivalent to @@display and "visible" to @@visible, is that correct? If I open 2gbp and select @@display, it selects 170 atoms, whereas @@visible selects 119. The difference is the ribbon backbone atoms for the residues where side chains are displayed. Their backbone atoms have @@display true and @@visible false.
Anyway, is that what these selectors should do?

Hmm… when you put it that way it sounds almost too trivial to bother with… but yes. ;) Still think it might be worth considering regardless, since in my experience some users seem to find the @@ specifications a bit too daunting. I don't think "displayed" is worth it, because I think it would be very confusing that it sometimes selects ribbon backbone atoms and sometimes doesn't, all depending on whether their "display" attribute is set or not, which is not otherwise obvious to the user. "visible" might be okay if it were named "visible-atoms" or something, in order to clarify that it selects explicitly displayed atoms and not other visible objects (ribbons, nucleotides).

It might be useful to have a "shown" selector (corresponding to Atoms.shown_atoms) that selects atoms depicted in any way, including by ribbons and nucleotides.
Seems okay, but until this happens you can just use "@@display" instead of "@@display=True" and "~@@display" instead of "@@display=False".
