Discussion

  • SPOKE
    • Elaine and Scooter discussed slow progress on SPOKE objectives.
    • Scooter says they will be writing a SPOKE paper, about 5-7 pages.
  • ChimeraX splash screen
    • User reported splash screen not reflective of user diversity
    • Most startup-times are around 2 seconds (ticket #4379), so splash screen not useful, unpleasant flash at startup.
    • Eric will remove splash screen and move team photo to About dialog.
    • Greg will look into showing install status for long Toolshed installs that occur at ChimeraX startup.
  • R01 proposal
    • Discussed 5 innovation ideas emailed by TomG
    • Molecular simulations - want to connect this strongly to cryoEM needs.
    • UMAP visualization, dimension reduction
      • Tristan mentions cryoDRGN for multi-conformational EM might be a UMAP cryoEM application.
      • Tristan suggests umap for visualizing rotamers defined by 5 or more parameters (torsion angles?)
    • Large tiled image data - this is one new frontier of diverse data type handling.
    • Video docs, did not have time to discuss
    • Toolshed support for PyPi or Conda distributions by third-party developers.
      • This is meant to be complementary to current Toolshed
      • Conda is a standard PyMol installation method, also standalone binary available.
      • Scooter notes PyMol has plugin manager that can pull plugins for various sites. Nice UI.
    • Also need R01 proposal to continue porting high-impact Chimera tools.
