Discussion Notes
- R01 grant next steps
- Still determining whether we can hire Hamish without assured R01 funding.
- Some R01s with our percentile rank funded (5 of 18 last year, https://report.nih.gov/nihdatabook/report/302?ic=NIGMS&fy=2020).
- Council decides funding on Feb 5, 2022.
- Program managers before council try to fund a breadth of proposals, called "programmatic policy decisions" that advise Council decision.
- Resubmission, earliest date would be March 5, change proposal to address reviewer concerns, add one page to answer criticisms. Goes back to same study section. About 1/4 to 1/3 of study section members would change.
- Can alternatively submit new proposal to new study section. But we don't know of any more appropriate section.
- Have to wait for review summary statement to decide next step.
- NIAID contract
- monthly report due
- R01 summary statement may influence what next NIAID contract will include (VR, AlphaFold, cryoEM tools...)
- Inquire again at today's meeting about discussion cryoEM resource needs.
- ChimeraX 1.3 release progress
- Aiming for end of November release
- Greg working on two tickets, don't remind of updates, pip install command
- Greg improved download page so releases all come from JSON file.
- Web site
- Scooter would like replace SVN management of our web pages with git.
- Just replace svn with git in a minimal way.
- Reworking web site should be postponed -- too big a problem given our other priorities.
- Tom Ferrin got rbvi.org domain that will redirect to ucsf site. Greg will get certificate for rbvi.org from Let's Encrypt to get https working.
- vr.ucsf.edu certificate expires Nov 10, Greg will update.
- Greg says Let's Encrypt certificates expire quickly. Scooter says get certificate from someone else for 2 year or 5 year expiration.
- Chimera
- Would be good to move Chimera source from SVN to GIT
- Scooter asks when should we drop support for Chimera bug reports?
- Chimera Trac database is having frequent problems too. Need to rebuild database once per week.
- Some problems caused by large attachments in email2trac.
- TomG will change the Chimera download page pitch for ChimeraX to be stronger wording.
- Chimera downloads outnumber ChimeraX currently 2 to 1.
- New hardware
- HP workstation shipping November 23 for Linux machine learning
- Can order Elaine new Mac laptop soon.
- Lab email
- We will not be able to host our own email in the future.
- We may need to change our long-standing cgl.ucsf.edu email addresses.
- Greg says UCSF IT may take over the domain and keep the current addresses.
- Investigating using gsuite
- msg.ucsf.edu mx records point to google mail, using gsuite.
- Tom Ferrin has registered rbvi.org that can be used email with gsuite
- Scooter says Gladstone uses gsuite
- Greg can talk to Matt Harrington about msg.ucsf.edu email handling.
Action Items
- Strengthen wording to use ChimeraX on Chimera download page. TomG
