Description
Managed to break mmCIF writing somehow. I *think* it's probably because I created a molecule with `open {smiles string} from smiles` and then merged it into the working model (using the same code as the `combine` command, but adds the selected model(s) into ISOLDE's current working model rather than creating a new one) without first giving it a chain ID (models created from SMILES have an empty string for the chain ID). I did remedy that after the fact using e.g. `setattr sel res chain_id E`, but mmCIF writing is still broken. I *can* still write to PDB, so no real harm done. Unfortunately I can't share the model in this case without getting a bunch of people to give permission.

I'm thinking a partial remedy for this is to simply make it illegal for a residue to have an empty chain_id? Allowing that feels like a recipe for trouble.

Many small-molecule formats have no (and therefore blank) chain IDs and many program-generated PDB files have blank chain IDs, so I think mmCIF writing has to do something reasonable with blank IDs, like issue a warning and use 'A' (or the first available ID) in the file. There really is no reason for a (standalone) small molecule to have a chain ID.

You can reproduce the problem that Tristan is having by "open smiles:c1ccccc1" and then try to save an mmCIF. The problem then continues to happen even after assigning a chain ID with "setattr #1 r chain_id E".

The label_asym value in a mmCIF file is an ASCII-ish identifier. In particular, it has no whitespace in it. Generated asym ids are alphanumeric. Strict compliance is not enforced, except for not having blanks in it.

Revised fix to write out inapplicable chain ids as a period. And when reading in a mmCIF file convert all question mark (?) and period (.) chain id values to blank -- because chain ids must not be empty.
