Duplicate of #2846.

The performance difficulties maintaining framerate in VR when trying to detect what the laser pointer hits are a big challenge.  We should discuss this before any work is done on it.  In general the VR code is fragile and experimental and any changes need to be reviewed by me (Tom).  It is going to be hard for Zach to contribute to the VR code because it is the most bleeding-edge code in ChimeraX, meaning that it is very prone to subtle breakage. ChimeraX VR has received only a tiny fraction (1/50) of the effort needed to make it production quality.  Nanome, the leading molecular VR software is the work of 15 people for over 5 years, gives an idea of the level of effort needed to make robust molecular VR.  Given this is so far beyond the level of resources we can put into VR we have to give careful consideration to what features we can implement that will be robust enough to be usable.
