Dear ChimeraX team,

the following error, was caused by the absence of the Mesa-Utils 
package. After installing the Mesa-Utils package, ChimeraX starts 
without errors and functions perfectly.

See Installed the following packages:
mesa-utils (8.4.0-1ubuntu1)
mesa-utils-bin (8.4.0-1ubuntu1)

Was anything else installed when you installed mesa-utils?

That is, did you switch from using the open source Nvidia driver, nouveau, to the proprietary Nvidia driver? That would explain why it works now. mesa-utils is not needed.

Dear Greg Couch,

we use the ChimeraX programme under a remote connection with Nomachine 
to our compute server.

For this setup I had to install the Mesa utils.

When I run it, I get the following error message in the terminal:

chimerax

GpuControl.CreateCommandBuffer.

Otherwise, the programme runs perfectly.

I don't know where those errors are coming from. But if you uninstall mesa-utils, ChimeraX should still work. I think when you installed mesa-utils, one of its dependencies may have fixed the problem you had. Or maybe nomachine was reconfigured to enable VirtualGL and that fixed it. I doubt ChimeraX would work without VirtualGL being enabled on nomachine (or x2go).
