Description
Started ChimeraX 1.4 on Windows 11, WSL2, Ubuntu 20.04LTS with GWSL X-Server. Before the upgrade ChimeraX 1.3 started normal.

Hi Wolfgang,

We're not planning to spend much time on this bug. Officially, we do not support running ChimeraX in virtual environments -- there are too many layers where it can fail, and it reduces performance. My guess is that this case is an interaction between WSL2 and the Qt user interface toolkit. We didn't deliberately break it, so we could accidentally fix it. Please try the ChimeraX 1.5 release candidate since uses a newer version of Qt.

I have had luck running ChimeraX in Ubuntu 20.04 running on VMware Workstation 16 Player on Windows. But I'm not concerned about performance, just basic testing.

Out of curiosity, what is preventing you from running the Windows version of ChimeraX?

Looks more like an OpenGL error than a Qt error

OpenGL.error.Error: Attempt to retrieve context when no valid context

And I thought this was usually caused by Wayland, as mentioned in this report of the same problem, and fixed in the daily builds and release candidate which does a better job detecting Wayland.

thanks for your support.

I can confirm that ChimeraX in versions:
- version 1.5rc202211080803 (2022-11-08)
- version 1.6.dev202211040017 (2022-11-04)
work with the following self-compiled (and put into LD_LIBRARY_PATH before starting chimerax) library versions:
- mesa 21.3.1
- mesa 22.2.3

For me this solution is fine, its an exotic developer config.
Normal users will use the ChimeraX Windows program anyway.

From a developers point of view its interesting how good it works that Windows 11 and WSL2 share a GPU for computing.

 Looks more like an OpenGL error than a Qt error

     OpenGL.error.Error: Attempt to retrieve context when no valid context

 And I thought this was usually caused by Wayland, as mentioned in this
 report of the same problem, and fixed in the daily builds and release
 candidate which does a better job detecting Wayland.

Glad to hear it was an OpenGL bug and it was fixed by updating mesa.

It is interesting how well it works. We use cygwin.com for a Linux environment on Windows so we can keep our build system almost the same on every platform (Windows, Mac, Linux). WSL2 does look promising. But my impression is that you can not run regular Windows programs, for example the compiler, from within WSL2.
