Description
I am using Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and I have installed ChimeraX from ucsf-chimerax_1.4ubuntu22.04_amd64.deb with sudo apt-get install ~/Downloads/ucsf-chimerax_1.4ubuntu22.04_amd64.deb as instructed in the downloads page but upon launching the software, it shows a black screen and doesn't load.
Is there something I am missing or some other prerequisites that apt might have missed out for me to properly use this after installation?

What graphics hardware do you have? In a terminal window, run:
lspci | grep VGA
to see what you have (and report it back to us). And if you have Nvidia graphics, have you installed the proprietary Nvidia driver? See https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-the-nvidia-drivers-on-ubuntu-22-04 for how to do it.

Josh, did you get ChimeraX working? Presumably by updating your graphics driver.

Hi, Apologies for the delayed reply, I didn't know how to reply to the ticket tracker site so I am just going to reply via email. It works if I run chimerax from the terminal but if I click the icon from the applications grid (bottom left of screen on default Ubuntu), it still launches with a black screen. I guess it technically works if I run it from the terminal. Best regards, Joshua Soon On Thu, 13 Oct 2022 at 04:18, ChimeraX <ChimeraX-bugs-admin@cgl.ucsf.edu> wrote:

(I tried to reproduce this today and failed.)
I agree that it doesn't make sense that running from the command line works and via the icon doesn't. How did you install the icon? Perhaps that is the bug. It should be installed in one of two ways: (1) from the ChimeraX command line: "linux xdg-install", or (2) from the terminal command line: "xdg-desktop-icon install /usr/share/applications/UCSF-ChimeraX-1.4.desktop". After that, you might need to right-mouse click on the icon and choose "Allow Launching".

Joshua, can you tell me more about your computer? Please use the Help / Report a Bug dialog and reference this bug. With that information, I can look for a similar computer, and try to reproduce the bug there.
