Description

The following bug report has been submitted:
Platform: Linux-3.10.0-1160.25.1.el7.x86_64-x86_64-with-glibc2.17
ChimeraX Version: 1.4.dev202204090007 (2022-04-09 00:07:38 UTC)
Description
Following on from Zach's comment on #6523: today's CentOS 7 daily build is still using PyQt5. Not that this particularly worries me - actually makes life easier given the tab-completion bug in the PyQt6 shell - but is this on purpose?

Summary: ChimeraX bug report submissionCentOS 7 daily build still Qt5

comment:2 by Greg Couch, 4 years ago

We're planning to drop the CentOS 7 build for the 1.4 release, or perhaps make it a nogui release without Qt. The final decision has not been made. I tried creating a CentOS 8 Singularity image with ChimeraX, but that doesn't work because Qt 6 uses system calls that are not in CentOS 7. A flatpak distribution would have the same issue. Next, I'm going to experiment with a CentOS/Rocky 8 Docker image on CentOS 7 to see if that works. We're still planning to build all of the Linux bundle binaries on CentOS 7. These details will be worked out in the next couple of weeks.

Hmm... guess it's time I update my Linux box then!

ChimeraX Issue Tracker

comment:4 by Tristan Croll, 4 years ago

Unless I'm missing something, if the Linux build environment remains CentOS 7 then you'll need to provide at least a nogui ChimeraX build for that platform for 3rd-party bundle developers like myself to compile with. Anyway, IT are updating my Linux box to Ubuntu 20.04 today... I'll set up a CentOS 7 VM in that for building purposes.

comment:5 by Tristan Croll, 4 years ago

Just a thought on this: given that this is a big move that has to happen anyway, it might solve a few problems at once if you were to shift over to using the Conda compiler toolset for builds? Looking at their docs (https://conda.io/projects/conda-build/en/latest/resources/compiler-tools.html), it seems easy enough to use just the compiler toolchain even if you're not actually building a Conda package. Would absolve 3rd-party developers of the need to maintain a CentOS 7 VM for build purposes, and would also make the Linux ChimeraX builds ABI-compatible with both Phenix and the official OpenMM builds (along with everything else in the Conda ecosystem).

No longer building for CentOS 7.
