Restoring session with volume not found leads to errors

Description
If when restoring a session a volume is not found and the user does not provide an alternate path, then other parts of the session restore sometimes produce errors if they were using that volume, such as coloring auto updates or clipping. For example ticket #5911.
Can session restore be made to work without errors when volume not restored?
