Description
The kids got an Oculus Quest 2 for Christmas, and I "borrowed" it briefly to see what was possible with ISOLDE in VR. The immediate upshot is that clearly I have a lot of work to do to make it really usable, starting with navigation - the Clipper "moving sphere" approach will need to be substantially revamped or replaced, for a start, and the delay on each crystallographic map update is still a killer. Still, I can see the promise.
A couple of things that came to mind while messing with it:
- a couple of times I managed to get the camera inside an atom/bond, completely blocking the view of everything else. Would it be feasible to implement a clipping sphere that hides everything within a user-specified distance from the head position (e.g. 10-20cm out from the eyes)? I think that would greatly improve clarity when navigating inside a model.
- If I turn the clipping planes off then depth cueing goes away with it. While the VR environment of course makes it less necessary, this still makes the view of an ISOLDE simulation really confusing. Is it possilbe to provide depth fog independent of clipping planes?

The ChimeraX VR rendering by default has the near clip plane at 10 cm and far at 500 m. And you can adjust those values with the vr command nearClipDistance and farClipDistance options.
I don't understand what you mean by "If I turn the clipping planes off then depth cueing goes away with it." First what do you mean by turn the clip planes off? Maybe you are talking about ISOLDE clipping modes? The default clipping behavior in VR described above (10 cm - 500 m) has depth cue on. Depth cue can be turned off globally (command "lighting depthCue false") or it can be turned of for individual models ("lighting model #1 depthCue false"), but if neither of those have been disabled and lighting is used then there should be depth cueing.
