Still trying to figure out why this is failing. The interim solution is to remove the updated mmCIF bundle. For me, that means removing two directories:

  • C:\Users\gregc\AppData\Local\UCSF\ChimeraX\1.2\site-packages\chimerax\mmcif
  • C:\Users\gregc\AppData\Local\UCSF\ChimeraX\1.2\site-packages\ChimeraX_mmCIF-2.4.dist-info

For other users, gregc needs to be replaced by their user name.

I've also removed the bundle from the toolshed, so other users won't trip over this. If someone needs the mmCIF reading bug fix, they'll have to use the daily build.
