Description

The following bug report has been submitted:
Platform: macOS-10.15.7-x86_64-i386-64bit
ChimeraX Version: 1.2.dev202103162155 (2021-03-16 21:55:33 UTC)
Description
Color key gives two much precision for numeric values, 6 digits for this color radial example

open 7294 from emdb
color radial #1 center #1 key true

produces a key with command

key red-white-blue :126.675 :152.749 :178.823

and those 6 digit lcolor key abels are all smashed together. I think 3 significant digits would be the best precision.

Might even be worth having a precision option (default 3 digits) in the show_key() command, since I see now that some tools would probably be better off with 2 digits precision instead of 3.

So I have a question. Let's say the endpoint data values associated with the key are 1.32 and 187.57 and that you're requesting a precision of 3. Should values displayed on the key be 1 and 188, 1.32 and 188, or 1.32 and 187.57?

in reply to:  6 comment:5 by goddard@…, 5 years ago

I think 1.32 and 188. By precision I mean like a %.3g format, so 3 significant digits. Of course the 1.32 and 188 is ugly and 1 and 188 is probably what you want in this case -- but the user can just delete the .32 in the color key gui to get that. If you wanted to go to a lot of trouble you could produce 1 and 188 in the color key code -- ie use the precision for the largest of the displayed values and make the others match that one. That would be nice but is tricky.

comment:6 by pett, 5 years ago

I wasn't asking what was easy or hard, just what was best. So you're saying 1 and 188 is best, right?

Okay, show_key() defaults to 3 digits of precision, but will show less if the data merits it. Unrelated to that, specifying "precision=None" will use the full precision of the data.
