The following bug report has been submitted:

ChimeraX Version: 1.2.dev202011130113 (2020-11-13 01:13:13 UTC)
Description
Session save which includes maps needlessly base64 encodes the maps making files bigger and reading and writing slower.  This was because in the past session save could not save bytes, only strings.  Now it handles bytes so save as bytes for better performance.

Fixed.

Session reading handles both base64 encoded older sessions and newer sessions that don't use base64 encoding.
