Description
The following bug report has been submitted:
Platform: macOS-10.15.6-x86_64-i386-64bit
ChimeraX Version: 1.2.dev202009231736 (2020-09-23 17:36:29 UTC)
Description
Would like to be able to open a PNG or JPEG image and have it simply texture a rectangle for showing images in VR meetings. Currenlty these open at multi-channel volume data which is a pain since color brightness curves are not linear. Also Phil Cruz tried moving a sars-cov-2 pore image in a VR meeting by selecting and moving and only the red channel moved.

Added photo models. Opening a file with ".jpg" suffix shows it as a rectangle model with the image on it. For other image file formats use the format option, e.g. "open figure.png format photo". Size can be set with width, height or pixelSize options (all in Angstroms).
I did not add 2D label support for photos as requested in ticket #1018. That would be kind of cool. The photo models serve a similar purpose on the image is positioned in 3d instead of being a 2D overlay. The main trouble with making the 2D label images is adding command options, session saving for images, .... There are only about 40 lines of code that do this in the photo model I added (bundles/image_formats/open_image.py). Those would be good to look at when adding 2D label image support, but only about 10 lines are probably reusable (open image file and make a texture out of it and put it on a rectangle).
This is related to ticket #1018 (overlaying 2D images on the scene), so it would be nice if when this ticket happens that it either also solves #1018 or that any routines that might be useful for #1018 are public.
