Pressing shift does not switch control from translate to rotate

Hi Chimera X folks,
I’m because I have discovered a bug in the current release version 1.12 (2026-06-12) on my Mac running OS 26.5 (25F71). When I am moving a model by assigning Right Mouse to “Move model”, the selected model translates fine, but if I press Shift, it doesn’t switch to rotate mode. That was the behavior in previous versions, and also the hover help says that it’s still supposed to do that, so it seems like a little bug. Thanks for all the years of quality software.

Mac ChimeraX 12.0 "Move model" mouse mode is working for me, translating with ctrl-drag and rotating with ctrl-shift-drag. It translates or rotates just the selected models.
My guess is that you have shift-ctrl-drag assigned to some other mouse mode. Maybe ISOLDE makes that assignment. If that is the case and you press the shift and ctrl keys then mouse/trackpad drag it will get whatever mouse mode is assigned to shift-ctrl-drag. In that case you should still be able to do the rotation by pressing ctrl, then mouse down, then press shift. This is crazy but when you press the mouse down it looks at what modifier keys are pressed. If it is only the ctrl key you will get the ctrl-drag mouse mode which will be move model. Adding the shift key will not change the mouse mode and it should rotate. If instead you press shift and ctrl and then the mouse button then it gets the mouse mode associated with shift-ctrl-drag which in your case I bet is something different. I try to discourage others from assigning shift-ctrl (or shift-right on Mac) to particular mouse modes because of exactly this problem, that shift is used as a modifier of several existing modes.
Let me know if this is not the right explanation for what you observe. Also if it is ISOLDE that is assigning the shift-right or shift-ctrl mouse mode we can hassle Tristan about it.
