The code properly gets the segment under the mouse between clip planes in scene coordinates. But then it appears that the code converts that line to volume box intercepts and scans the entire line through the volume.

Fixed.

The place marker on maximum code was indeed using the entire intersection of the view line (infinite in both directions) with the volume. I added code to trim it to the near/far clip planes.
