Description

The following bug report has been submitted:
Platform: Darwin-18.5.0-x86_64-i386-64bit
ChimeraX Version: 0.9 (2019-04-28)
Description
Hi,

The capacity to "snap" UI elements (e.g. the model panel or Side View panel) is great if one has a large monitor, but is not really suited to work on laptops. For example, I use a 13" MBP, and if I have a couple of panels snapped on the right hand side in ChimeraX the size of the actual working area is really small.

However, if I de-snap all the panels and just have them as floating windows, every time I try to rearrange them they try to snap to one part of the main GUI or another. Would it be possible to add a preference to disable UI snapping? Apologies if it already exists and I missed it somehow - I did try to find such a setting but without luck.

Cheers
Oli

Hi Oliver,

There are two existing features that may help in this case. The first is the icon on the bottom right of the ChimeraX window that looks like one square inside another. Clicking that will hide all tools (other than the command line) and give that space to the main graphics. Clicking it again will show the tools again. The other thing is that if you right click on any tool to bring up its option menu, there is a "Dockable Tool" entry in the menu. Unchecking that entry will cause the tool window to float and also not be able to be docked back into the main window (unless you re-check "Dockable Tool").
I'm hoping the combination of there two things is "good enough" that I needn't add a specific option to make all tools globally undockable...

Ah, I knew about the first of those but didn’t realize there was a way to make tools undockable on a case by case basis - that should do the trick!

Cheers
Oli
