Also, would it be possible at some point to add a GUI option for grouping models - perhaps a button in the model panel that allows for automatic grouping of the selected models?
[probably turned on/off from the context menu like the next/previous controls are]

The next daily build will have an interface for grouping models, accessible from the "Group Models..." context menu entry of the Model Panel. Let me know if it lacks things you need.
