 Upon further testing, ChimeraX also failed sometimes when, immediately after loading 2ace, I clicked electrostatic (without selecting anything). This was inconsistent. In one instance, after the failure/error message, simply immediatley clicking electrostatic again worked.
So far, it crashes every time that I select add #1 before clicking electrostatic.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for reporting this problem. It was fixed a couple of days ago and only affected one build, but unfortunately that's build that you have. If you get a current build then you won't get this error, though you might want to hold off one day because the current build won't show labels when using the Actions→Label menus. That fix will be in tomorrow's build.
