Description
Hello, I was just wondering if ChimeraX 1.8 would be updated so this would run on macOS Sequoia? We are having problems with Gatekeeper when installing and opening the app. Thanks Jordan Ladley Apple Platform Manager | Information & Digital Group | Apple@Warwick Team | warwick.ac.uk/apple<file:///Users/u2271126/Downloads/warwick.ac.uk/apple> jordan.ladley@warwick.ac.uk<mailto:jordan.ladley@warwick.ac.uk> | Mobile: 07880 175416 | The University of Warwick<https://warwick.ac.uk> University House | Kirby Corner Road | Coventry | CV4 8UW | Find us on the interactive map<https://warwick.ac.uk/about/visiting/maps/> [A white x in a grey circle Description automatically generated]<https://twitter.com/uniofwarwick> [A white letter in a grey circle Description automatically generated] <https://www.facebook.com/warwickuniversity> [A grey circle with a white logo Description automatically generated] <https://instagram.com/uniofwarwick/> [A grey circle with white letters Description automatically generated] <https://www.linkedin.com/school/uniofwarwick> [A grey circle with a play button Description automatically generated] <https://www.youtube.com/@uniofwarwick> [A white logo with a black background Description automatically generated] <https://www.reddit.com/user/uniofwarwick> [A white circle with a black background Description automatically generated] <https://www.tiktok.com/@uniofwarwick> [signature_3030629125]

Zach you have macOS Sequioa beta. Do you have any trouble installing ChimeraX 1.8? Can you advise Jordan Ladley on this? Sequioa is due to be released next week Sept 16 from what I read online.

Also, Jordan, I believe you can get macOS to open it anyway by finding the app in the Finder, right clicking on it to bring up a menu, and choosing "Open" from that menu. The app should open, and continue to be openable after that without resorting to the menu trick.

Hello,
Apologies, yes you can. However we deploy via Jamf Pro and restrict system settings for our users as they are students.
When we package as a .pkg we have an issue. Just wondered if there was any extra steps we need to do when repackaging as a .pkg. This is the only app we have an issue with when we repackage as a .pkg
Thanks
Jordan Ladley

I have no idea what Jamf Pro or Gatekeeper are, or what they do to determine compatibility or legitimacy. I would guess that if you're taking the ChimeraX DMG and repackaging it as a PKG then you might be losing our signature on the code and that could cause issues. Re-sign ChimeraX before or after packaging; however you're supposed to do it for PKGs.

Zach, does the ChimeraX 1.8 dmg install on macOS Sequoia beta for you?
Jordan Ladley, does the ChimeraX 1.8 dmg install on macOS Sequoia for you, drag and drop, without repackaging.
I'm guessing the answer is yes to both. The ChimeraX 1.8 installs correctly on Sequoia. The problem as Jordan states is that they are trying to repackage ChimeraX as a .pkg. We have no experience doing that. Perhaps the other apps you repackage are not notarized, most science applications are not. But ChimeraX is notarized by Apple (verified to have no malicious content) and perhaps when you repackage it notarization is causing the problem. Perhaps you will get it to work if you strip the notarization from the ChimeraX application before repackaging. ChimeraX is notarized using the Mac command-line notarytool and codesign programs. Those programs probably have some options to strip notarization, or you could search online to find out how to do that.
By the way, the ChimeraX academic license does not allow redistribution. It is a license with a single end user, not an institution. That helps us track usage and helps us get the grants that fund ChimeraX and allow it to be free. So repackaging is probably in violation of the license. But you have our permission to do it.
