Description
There are situations in which one wants to show specific residues as CA balls or spheres in combination with the ribbon...
currently even with "cartoon hide false" it will not show the CA atoms unless you are also showing something else that is bonded to the CA atoms.
Not sure I put in the right classifications for the ticket, feel free to change.

Atom visibility update code only took into account ribbon "display"ness but not "hide backbone"ness. Fixed in [01f7023].
