ChimeraX 1.7.1 worked one time but will not start a second time

Dear ChimeraX-bugs,

I recently downloaded ChimeraX version 1.7.1 for Mac. This updated version worked one time. I noticed some warnings / errors when opening a structure by pdb id code or when applying the mm command (cannot remember). The program did not work a second time. No window appears on startup. Does not appear to be running. At the older releases page, I do not see the version 1.7 archived. If possible, please post ChimeraX version 1.7 to the older release page and I will try to restore a functional but fairly recent ChimeraX for my fairly old Mac mid 2014 MacBook Pro running Mojave.

Hi Martin,

The last version of ChimeraX that worked with MacOS 10.14 was 1.4. You can get that version from the "Older Releases" link on the download page.

ChimeraX 1.7.1 on Intel Mac is supposed to work with macOS 10.14 (although the ChimeraX Download web page incorrectly says it needs 11.0, contamination from the daily build).

ChimeraX 1.8 daily builds require macOS 11.0 (because the Qt window toolkit now requires that).

To see what is going wrong with ChimeraX 1.7.1 you can try to start it from a Terminal (Applications / Utilities / Terminal) using a command like

/Applications/ChimeraX-1.7.1.app/Contents/MacOS/ChimeraX

This may show a traceback indicating why it fails to start. It probably has something to do with a problem with your settings in

~/Library/Application Support/ChimeraX

and deleting or renaming that directory (it contains your ChimeraX file history and any settings you made) shoule allow it to start and will recreate the directory.

AFAIK, 1.7.1 is supposed to work with MacOS *10.15*+. 1.4 is the last version documented to work with 10.14, unless all our release notes are wrong.

Intel Mac ChimeraX 1.7.1 was built on 10.14. The universal dmg has compression that only works with 10.15. And Mac ARM ChimeraX requires 11.0. We can test 1.7.1 on build machine essex2 if there is any doubt.
