Starting Chimera-X up hit some kind of X issue, see log. (Not sure I would call this a bug, but anyway.)

(Not the Mac expert) I'm very surprised that _imaging.cpython-311-darwin.so is linked with libxcb, which is linked with libXau, on macOS. It seems like a homebrew version got into the build?

Hi Wayne, I think we met 20 years ago in Cambridge when I was talking to you about Sparky. I am Tom Goddard.

I just tried ChimeraX 1.7.1 on macOS 10.14 and get the same error you report. The Python image library (Pillow 10.2.0) is for some reason needing libXau.dylib which is surprising since ChimeraX and macOS generally don't use the X11 window system. I see this bug reported on the Pillow project

That ticket says the next Pillow release 10.3.0 scheduled for April 1, 2024 fixes this bug. Unfortunately ChimeraX daily builds no longer support macOS 10.14 because the Qt window toolkit that we rely on dropped support for it, now requires macOS 11 or higher.

So the solution for macOS 10.14 is to use ChimeraX 1.7 or 1.6.1. I tested ChimeraX 1.7 and it works correctly. We updated from Pillow 10.0.1 to 10.2.0 in going from ChimeraX 1.7 to 1.7.1 because Pillow 10.0.1 wrote slightly corrupted jpeg files.

Unfortunately ChimeraX 1.7 is not on the ChimeraX older releases web page

Have to use ChimeraX 1.7 or older on macOS 10.14 to get working Pillow library.

I don't think we plan to release a ChimeraX 1.7.2 version but if we do I will include the newer fixed Pillow if it is available.

Thanks Tom for sorting, yes, we met many years ago. I guess both of us are getting close to retirement (!).
