This appears to be a Qt bug. It has been reported twice before #9712 and #9817. All reports are with ChimeraX 1.6 using Qt 6.4. Possibly it does not happen with Qt 6.3 which is what ChimeraX 1.7 uses. And it may be fixed in Qt 6.6 which is the current Qt release. So I'm not going to try to work around it unless I see it in the Qt the next ChimeraX is using.
