2025

March 14, 2025 - Demonstration of virtual reality visualization of opioid receptor and opioid drugs for 5 UCSF Biophysics program student applicants. Also showed Sony and Acer 3D flat-panel molecular visualization. 1 hour. Organized by Nicole Flowers.

January 9, 14, 16, 21, 2025 - 8 hours teaching ChimeraX and machine learning structure prediction with AlphaFold 3 to 15 Biophysics graduate students. Team projects involved predicting 1500 FDA approved compounds bound to virus targets. Course organized by John Gross.

2024

October 23, 2024 - 100 minute hands-on tutorial for 40 students and researchers as part of the Purdue University Structural Biology and Biophysics Club (SBBC) workshop series. ChimeraX structure vis, cryoEM maps and alphafold models based on this tutorial. Many good questions. Organized by Nourin Ferdausi and Priyanka Naik.

June 12, 2024 - CryoEM virtual reality training for Eric Tse, head of the UCSF Sandler cryoEM facility and 5 colleagues from the Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease preparing their facility for helping users with VR. Showed both standalone Looksee VR and ChimeraX VR. 2 hours.

June 5, 2024 - Tom Ferrin showed virtual reality visualization of opioid receptor and endorphins and paxlovid to group of about 20 IEEE retirees using LookSee standalone VR. Held in Livermore.

April 30, 2024 - Showed guests at the UCSF Byer's lecture reception opioid receptors and ligands and electron microscopy with LookSee virtual reality, 1 hour, about 20 visitors. Organized by Aashish Manglik.

March 1, 2024 - Gave hands-on virtual reality molecular visualization session for 15 UCSF Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacogenomics (PSPG) program students using Quest 3 headsets with pass-through video and hand tracking.

February 21, 2024 - Gave 2 hour ChimeraX intro hands-on tutorial in-person at an NIAID biovisualization workshop in Foundation for Advanced Education in the Scienes classrooms to about 40 researchers and students. Presented cryoEM and AlphaFold and answered many basic ChimeraX use questions. Organized by Meghan McCarthy and Darrell Hurt from NIAID.

February 6, 2024 - AlphaFold prospecting how-to for John Gross group meeting at UCSF, about 20 people including members of Allison Williams, Hiten Madhani, Alan Frankel labs, and one other new faculty. 90 minutes, extensive discussion, many (20) questions.

January 10, 2024 - Methods in Macromolecular Structure class at UCSF, 2 hour ChimeraX tutorial, ~20 students by Zoom, organized by Aashish Manglik and John Gross.

November 9, 2023 - CryoEM workshop at the University of Kansas, 1.5 hour training, 25 student and faculty participants organized by Phenix.

May 19, 2023 - CryoEM image processing workshop at SLAC, 2 hour ChimeraX training, 50 students in person at Stanford and 50 online, organized by Wah Chiu.

March 24, 2023 - Virtual reality demonstration for UCSF Biophysics student applicants, 7 students, 45 minutes, paxlovid drug resistance, in the VizVault at UCSF Genentech Hall, organized by Nicole Flowers.

March 20, 2023 - West Coast Structural Biology workshop poster session showing Quest virtual reality of paxlovid drug resistance, ribozyme, and thylakoid membrane electron microscopy, 2 hours of hands-on demonstration, with Quest Pro and Quest 2 headsets, first demo of pass-through video for augmented reality, presented with Mike Schmid (Stanford) at Asilomar.

January 17, 2023 - DRUG DESIGN: Personal Genome Interpretation in the post-AlphaFold world UCSF course, 7 participants, 2 hour ChimeraX tutorial on the delta opioid receptor, organized by Jaime Fraser

November 1-4, 2022 - CZI Imaging Institute workshop talk on visualization needs for electron tomography, 50 participants, Mountain View, organized by Dave Agard, Bridget Carragher and Clint Potter.

May 2, 2022 -- Virtual reality show and tell for UCSF visitors attending Byer's lecture "Getting the Message Across: How Cell Signaling Goes Awry in Human Disease" by Natalia Jura. Let about 25 people use VR to look at HER2/HER3 receptor complexes, 90 minutes, UCSF Genentech Hall atrium.

April 25, 2022 -- Stanford course "Biological cryogenic electron microscopy and tomography" BIOE 320 ChimeraX tutorial looking at the mouse insulin receptor, 10 participants, 90 minutes, on-site at Stanford, hosted by Wah Chiu.

March 29, 2022 -- SBGrid Spring Mini-Series - Cryo-electron microscopy of membrane proteins: from sample to structure ChimeraX demonstration of AlphaFold and predicted errors, 200 participants, 30 minutes, hosted by Jamaine Davis, Piotr Sliz, and Michelle Ottaviano.
