Discussion Notes

• Wynton and Plato updates
  • Only plato nodes of Wynton cluster are running while trying to restore corrupted beegfs Wynton disks.
  • Plato nodes wilkins, watson, franklin running Rocky 8 operating system now.
  • Crick node is still running CentOS 7, don't use it.
  • Converting Python 2 scripts to Python 3. Don't plan to put Python 2 on Rocky 8.
  • Updating mailing lists to Python 3 version of mailman.
  • DNS was broken because Rocky 9 does not accept SHA1 encryption while DNA-sec requires it.

• Benefits of Rocky 8
  • Newer Trac version 1.5.4 based on Python 3.
  • Nicer mailing list web viewer.
  • Using Python 3.8
  • Using Apache 2.4
  • Opal is gone
  • Compilers are more modern.

• Certificates for web sites and email
  • Requesting certificates from UCSF IT has been difficult. They ask for unreasonable changes like eliminating Python 2 on CentOS 7 and won't issue certificates until it is resolved.
  • Plan is to get all certificates from Let's Encrypt instead. They expire every 90 days, so renewal has to be automated.
  • Tom Ferrin suggests it might be simpler to pay for 5-year wild-card certificate. Cost ~$100 per year.
  • Greg should have all certificates updated by tomorrow.
  • After, Greg or Scooter can look at getting long-term wild-card certificates.
  • Elaine reports Firefox cannot access ChimeraX website giving security warning.

• Email
  • Tom Ferrin asks if we have switched from sendmail to postfix. Not yet. Greg says mailman update complicates switch.
  • Campus IT purchased ProofPoint for RBVI.
  • Need to figure out how users can look at quarantined email. Should not require a ProofPoint account.

• VR demos
  • TomG is giving VR demo to 3 or 4 people from UCSF Office of Sponsored Research Thurs June 8, 3 pm.
  • Scooter is giving a VR demo to Joe DeRisi June 15. Will need to understand latest Quest molecule viewing.
