Discussion Notes

• R01 funding
  • NIGMS agreed to fund our original R01 submission starting in a week.
  • Tom Ferrin needs to submit annual report for close of previous R01 right away.
  • Since we expected funding in March but now are getting it 6 months early, have too much R01 funding.
  • Plan is to hire a new developer.

• Offsite meeting
  • Will have offsite sailing and lunch October 18, Scooter's boat
  • Possibly pick up at Treasure Island, lunch at Angel Island
  • Conrad will join, Al cannot make it, Cheryl will join
  • Dress in layers, prepared for cold weather or warm

• Equipment spending
  • New projector for vizvault ordered and shipped
  • Will need NIH permission on capital expenses > $5000.
  • 4 A40 GPU server for machine learning, $25000. R01 funds are for research, not web services, so this would be for development.
  • More memory and local ssd drives for plato.
  • Replace BOXX VR computer, replace Greg's computer, Mac M1 for Scooter's development, graphics card for Scooter's desktop.
  • Poster printer replacement if SACS will be continued.

• SACS
  • Should we continue the Sequence Analysis and Consulting Service (SACS).
  • Just 8 groups using it. Not much consulting happening.
  • If discontinued we would continue to support collaborators such as Al Burlingame.

• New hire
  • R01, NIAID and Phenix R24 funding cover about 5 FTE. Cytoscape, SPOKE funds available.
  • Two ideas about who to hire
    • Python / Virtual Reality, ChimeraX focus
    • Python / Web / Javascript, broader projects ChimeraX, SPOKE, Mass spec.

• Flu shots
  • Available in Genentech Hall next Thursday Sep 22, 8 AM - 4 PM.
