Registration server unavailable - I am unable to register, but also can't figure out how to deactivate the popup asking me to register when I start ChimeraX. I guess I will try to edit the registration file under my user profile next, but it'd be nicer to just be able to register

Hi Alexis,

Thanks for reporting this. I was able to register from home without problem just now, so maybe the server was temporarily unavailable? Could you try again and see if it works for you now?

Sorry Eric, I'm not sure how to test. When I restart ChimeraX it doesn't
ask again. Perhaps it's programmed to only ask once a day? Can you think of
a way to trick it into checking the registration again?

You can "manually" register with Tools→Utilities→Registration

So, I tried again and still got the same error.

I suspected an SSL-certificate-related error, even though I was using my
usual workaround (export REQUESTS_CA_BUNDLE env variable, start ChimeraX
from that terminal) which works well for things like pulling residue
definition files from the RCSB or installing from the toolshed.

I tested this theory by connecting to the internet via my personal hotspot
and the registration worked.

So problem solved, kinda.

It might be nice to know what was going on though... if it's not much
trouble, could you tell me the URL that the registration tries to hit? I'm
curious why pointing to my certificates was not sufficient in this case.

The registration URL is https://www.rbvi.ucsf.edu/chimerax/cgi-bin/chimerax_registration.py . The code doing the registration is in the chimerax.registration bundle.

Thanks I don't know how to debug this further, so I'm giving up. Only will
affect people like me once every few years and doing the registration from
home or any other non-work location isn't too bad a workaround.

So it is weird that you need to do the REQUESTS_CA_BUNDLE workaround at all. My guess is this is due to some gene.com required software running on your computer. So, you should work with gene.com IT support to fix it. Maybe they need to whitelist the URL on their end.

And if it helps, our web site SSL certificates signed by Let's Encrypt:

Issuer: C = US, O = Let's Encrypt, CN = R11

and their certificate was signed by:

Issuer: C = US, O = Internet Security Research Group, CN = ISRG Root X1
