Well, it has cleared up following my deliberate upgrade to the 64-bit
version.  I didn't even try the 32-bit version this time (though that
was the one I had been using).

I guess that the problem lies somewhere in the underlying 32-bit libs??
I'm using Debian Sid (unstable... ;-) FWIW.

Sorry about the post, but at least the mystery has been managed for the
time being...
