[Chimera-users] Running Chimera on X server

I'm curious why you thought it would be fast?  Running Chimera remotely
is a recipe for slow interaction.  Chimera works best when it is running
locally on your computer (and not in a virtual machine) and the data is
on your computer.  That also avoids any graphics driver differences
between the remote server and your local workstation that cause bugs.
Running Chimera locally on your computer would probably fix your movie
making issues too.

That said,  it is possible to make the remote use of Chimera less slow.
If the remote server has a discrete graphics card and the
corresponding graphics driver installed, ask the remote system
administrator to install virtualgl.  Virtualgl does the 3D graphics on
the server and copies an image back to your computer. The interaction
will still be slow unless both the remote server and your computer are
on the same local network, but it can make it more usable.
