Dear Prem Rajak,
As it says on the home page, Chimera is free for noncommercial use: academic, nonprofit, educational, personal.  You and your students and postdocs do not need to buy a license for the purposes you described: academic research and making figures for publications. 

Just go to the download page and click the appropriate link to download the program for your type of computer.  Before the download starts, there will be a (free) noncommercial license agreement and you must agree with it and click the "Accept" button.  Then the download will start immediately.

Only commercial users (e.g. for-profit companies) require a paid commercial license.
