Dear Ana,
Active/inactive controls whether you can rotate or translate a model with the mouse. Zooming is simply showing things larger or smaller and it always applies to everything -- you cannot zoom only one thing and not the others. If you really mean Z-translation (moving closer or farther away) and not zooming, then probably the easiest way is instead to activate all, rotate everything 90 degrees, deactivate the models you don't want to move, and then selectively X-translate or Y-translate (instead of trying to Z-translate).
