Though Chimera doesn't currently do ambient occlusion, turning on shadows can add a good sense of depth to a surface depiction.  You turn on shadows by bringing up the Side View (Favorites->Side View) and then clicking on its Effects tab.  In that tab there is a check button for turning on shadows.
