This sounds like a hardware problem.  Are you using a MacBook Pro with 
NVidia 8600M graphics by any chance?  There was a problem with the 
graphics chips overheating and eventually failing.  See 
<http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377>.  There may be other models with 
similar problems.
