Chimera uses ffmpeg to encode movie files. Searching online, it
appears that ffmpeg supports .png files for output, which are APNG
files. So it should possible to add that as an output format.
Currently, we are only making bug fixes for Chimera, so if we add
this feature, it would be for ChimeraX. That said, the movie
encoding support code in ChimeraX is very similar to Chimera's.
So it looks like it would be easy to backport. I'll create a
ChimeraX ticket on your behalf so you'll be notified when it is
added to ChimeraX.
