As it says on the home page, Chimera is free for noncommercial use: academic, nonprofit, educational, personal. You and your students and postdocs do not need to buy a license for the purposes you described: academic research and making figures for publications. <br>

Just go to the download page and click the appropriate link to download the program for your type of computer. Before the download starts, there will be a (free) noncommercial license agreement and you must agree with it and click the "Accept" button. Then the download will start immediately.<br>
<br>
Only commercial users (e.g. for-profit companies) require a paid commercial license.<br>
