Yes, it was a driver related problem. It seems that my computer got an automatic "update" that broke things up (GPL libraries??). After removing/reinstalling, the Radeon graphics driver. Chimera now works fine.

Did the graphics driver change?  This is probably a graphics driver bug -- it sounds like the same thing two other people reported this month, and we've just been advising people to update the graphics driver to the latest version, as in this post:
