Well, it sounds like the graphics driver is buggy.  The latest Linux 
version from ATI is version 8.18.6.  Please try the lastest version.  If 
that still fails, let us know, and downgrade to 8.14.13.

We have also seen a similar hanging problem when chimera is started up 
from a terminal window and then the user types control-Z to suspend 
chimera.  The workaround is to "not do that" and to start a new terminal 
window to work in.
