Well, a single "-" is a hyphen not a dash typographically and "--" (not
"- -") is a typewriter equivalent of an em dash ("\(em" in troff speak).
HTML has a special "—" token that I would use instead if I felt
confident that the various browsers supported it.  Mozzilla renders
— as --.  :-)
